This panel shares stories of our elders' bravery, discusses the challenges they face in today's shifting social landscape, and explores ways we can honor, support, and protect these vital members of our community. Discover how to preserve their legacy, learn from their experiences, and strengthen the bonds between generations. 'Legacy of Courage' is an invitation to celebrate the past and inspire action for a future where every LGBTQ+ elder is valued and respected.

This panel, presented by The Outwords Archive and the One Institute, brought together a group of dynamic and resilient individuals who have been at the forefront of LGBTQ+ and other social justice movements in Los Angeles for decades. These queer elders of color have experienced firsthand the intersectional nature of oppression and worked tirelessly to dismantle it.

In this conversation, panelists Joey Terrill, Phill Wilson, and Mia Yamamoto reflect on their life’s work of amplifying the voices of those who have been silenced, creating safe spaces, and advocating for policy changes. Through their stories, they offer invaluable insight into the challenges and triumphs of bringing our whole selves to every fight. The panel was moderated by Elizabeth (Liz) T. Vazquez.

Being a black man in the 1960s in New Orleans, Michael Hickerson was no stranger to racism. It was even more disappointing when he experienced it within the LGBTQ community. He didn’t let that stop his desire to help others, though, whether it was supporting those living with HIV, or helping people recover from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.

In the early 70s, Lani Ka'ahumanu began to realize that she was very much attracted to women. Only later did she fall for a man, which led her to realize that she was, in fact, bisexual. Despite a bi-phobic undercurrent in the community, Lani pressed forward and devoted her energy to fighting for bisexual representation and inclusion.

In the 1970s, Elizabeth Coffey Williams visited John Hopkins University in the hopes of participating in its pioneering gender program. Despite a deep desire to complete her transition, she was met with resistance from the medical team.
